What was the Main Cause of World War Two?
Provide a factor, and explain why you think it was important. Be as specific as you can!

THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES was the main cause of World War Two because it left the German people determined to get revenge.
I agree with Mr. Smith, the Treaty of Versailles left Germany with impossible reparations to repay and put them in an impossible financial position
American isolationists who believed America should take advantage of its geographic good fortune to concentrate on itself, while avoiding foreign conflicts
the peace "built on quicksand" - The Treaty of Versailles to end WWI left Germany in a rut... Hitler more than anyone, was destined to retort
The Treaty of Versailles left Germany in a position where Hitler could knock over the first of the dominoes.
The Depression was the main cause of WW2. Without this, Germany would not have been thrown into chaos and Hitler would never have been elected in 1933
APPEASEMENT! Hitler was only able to get away with so much and become so strong because of the spinelessness of Chamberlain and Daladier e.g. at Munich!
Failure of Britain and France to enforce the terms of the Covenant of the League of Nations.
10/26/29 in US (world banker) to call loans from GB & Fr and to stop lending. Crisis world wide, factories closed, economic despair caused govt instability
The policy of Appeasement allowed Hitler to continue aggression without consequences coupled with his desire to regain Germany's integrity lost after WWI
Japan's invasion of Manchuria demonstrated the weakness of the League of Nations. Italy (in Abyssinia) and Germany (Rhineland, etc) followed Japan's lead.
What would have happened had Stresemann not died before the Wall Street Crash? Would the crisis have bit so deep?
Interesting point...although remember that Stresemann was a right-winger who believed in deflationary policies too...
FASCISM.
Japanese, German, and Italian citizens allowed fascist leaders to lead their countries in unprovoked aggression and racism. This led to WW conflict.
Anti-semitism- Hitler wanted to wage a war against the entire Jewish race. To do this he needed to conquer the world. Read War Against the Jews
I agree, the Depression was behind Manchuria and even Abyssinia (to an extent). It led to a drive for autarky across Europe (oh..and Hitler too)!
Fear. If the west hadn't 'run scared' from the end of WW1 onwards things might have been rather different and Adolf might not have had the confidence to fight.
Imperialism - Hitler wanted an empire just like England and France. Bismarck's effort had been ruined by the Kaiser in WWI, so Germany tried again in 1939.
The main cause of WW2 was Britain and France's policy of appeasement (+the uselessness of the league). It left dictatorships dangerously aggressive and reckless
For the starting point of WWII look to Germany's defeat in WWI. The desire to avenge the humiliation of Versailles.
I agree with this as the central reason - the Depression led to a resurgence of imperialistic ambition, shared by Hitler who came to power on the back of it.
In Europe, it was the survival of prewar German elites in the judiciary, the Reichswehr, and the police. Militarism andauthoritarianism survived.
I agree

I think appeasement played a huge part, if not for appeasement, Hitler would have realised he needed to stop. The League of Narions fail and Hitler's policies.
