There are two classes of bats: Megabats and Microbats
Most Megabats eat fruit.
Bats are mammals, and warm blooded.
Bats belong to a group of flying mammals called Chirroptera (Ki-ROP-ter-a). That word is the greek word for "hand wing". Bats actully fly their fingers.
Fruitbats, also Microbats, are also called "Flying foxes".
Bats are the second biggest group of mammals, right next to rodents.
Bats are nocturnal.

Bats have flexible wings.
There are over 1,050 different species bats in the world.
Megabats or fruit bats, are also called flying foxes. They are named for the fox-like faces.
Bats roost together in large groups called colonies. Some species are contained in only a few colonies making them vulnerable to dangers.
Bat ancestors were probably insectivores that lived in trees and ate insects. The earliest known bat lived 50 million years ago & is only slightly different.
A single brown bat can eat over 600 mosquitoes in an hour. Wow!
Microbats use echolocation to navigate and catch prey.
Microbats feed on insects. Some of the larger ones feed on birds, lizards and even fish. Vampire bats feed on the blood of large mammals.
Microbats lack the claw at the second toe of the forelimb.
Microbats like the under fur.
The ears of Microbats don't form a closed ring, but the edges are separated from each other at the base of the ear.
